Leishmania Skin Test

This product is made from the promastigote form of the parasite Leishmania tropica. It is used in the assessment of cell-mediated hypersensitivity to this organism. Parasites of the genus Leishmania are found worldwide and cause the disease leishmaniasis, which may involve the skin, mucosal surfaces and viscera. The World Health Organization estimates there are 12 million cases of leishmaniasis from a population of 350 million at risk individuals.

At the present time the diagnosis of leishmaniasis is based on clinical findings, isolation of the parasite from lesions and/or serological findings. Leishmania skin test antigen is designed to be both a diagnostic and epidemiologic tool in the detection and management of leishmaniasis. A DTH response after 48 hours is indicative of infection with the organism. This product is being manufactured under contract with the US Department of Defense.
