| Allermed is currently pursuing FDA licensing of spherule derived coccidioidin, a skin test antigen that is used to assess cell-mediated hypersensitivity to the fungus Coccidioides immitis. The antigen is used in the diagnostic evaluation of persons who are suspected of having been exposed to the fungus.
Outbreaks of coccidioidomycosis occur when persons inhale arthrospores of the fungus. These spores become airborne during dust storms, or as a result of man-made events, such as farming, construction, excavation, etc. In humans and animals, the arthrospore undergoes a metamorphic change to the in-vivo form of the fungus called the spherule. spherule derived coccidioidin is made from the in-vivo growth form of the fungus.
The product is injected intradermally and elicits a DTH response after 48 hours if the person being tested has been infected with the fungus. |
